Prenatal Care at North York General Hospital
|
Thirty years ago, North York General opened amid country fields and dirt roads.
Today, construction cranes crowd the skyline as the new subway transforms
the intersection of Leslie and Sheppard once again. While the surrounding
landscape has changed dramatically in 30 years, our core values of community
involvement, excellence and commitment to caring have never wavered.
The Hospital has deep roots in the community. In the early 1960s, a group
of concerned residents and service club representatives identified the need
for a hospital in the growing suburban area of northeast Toronto. The citizens'
group joined forces with the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire (IODE),
Missionary Health Institute and Canadian Mothercraft Society to establish
North York General Hospital.
In addition to government grants, local residents raised an impressive amount
of money to build the hospital. Almost 3,000 volunteers canvassed door-to-door
and raised more than $3.2 million of the $8.6 million cost of the new hospital.
Community support has been unflagging for three decades. The community supported
expansion projects and vital services such as the chemotherapy clinic and
palliative care. It also is reflected in the vibrant Volunteer Services
program, which has contributed 2.3 million hours of service since 1968.
